What is the claim about?

one

Dangerous challenges

On TikTok, "challenges" frequently circulate in which users are encouraged to complete a certain task. There have been multiple fatal accidents involving children, including those caused by the "blackout challenge." In January 2021, an Italian girl died from suffocation related to this challenge. In February 2024, a 17-year-old boy from Belgium also died after attempting to participate in it. Children in the United States have also died from the blackout challenge, some as young as 8 years old.

two

Privacy

TikTok collects a wide range of data to monitor its users. For instance, the TikTok app collected information such as the model and version of the user’s (mobile) device, data from previous app installations, memory data, GPS location, SMS logs, and even the IMEI number of the associated phone. This data was and is used to create detailed profiles of users in order to deliver personalized content and advertising. The excessive amount of tracking data, combined with the fact that this data was stored on Chinese servers, was a major cause for concern.

three

Children

TikTok is especially popular among young people and children. Although an age limit of 13 years is set during the registration process, in practice this is easy to circumvent by simply entering a different date of birth, without any form of (proactive) age checking taking place. TikTok announced a “Parental Controls” feature of the platform in February 2020. However, it is relatively easy to bypass Parental Controls by creating a new account.

Why join this claim?

  1. Protect your children – TikTok is very popular with a younger audience. They have collected data from children without a valid legal basis or parental consent (where required).

  2. You are entitled to your rights – Due to the GDPR, you are entitled to compensation if a company or agency processes your data unlawfully.
  3. TikTok has violated your privacy – TikTok is taking advantage of your personal data without your consent and transferring your data to China.
  4. Together we send a signal – We must end this kind of privacy violation. Companies must be transparent in their handling of personal data.
